A vigorous deciduous shrub from eastern North America, named for its bark that peels in layers. Rounded clusters of small white or pinkish flowers open in late spring, followed by reddish seed pods. Extremely hardy, usually 1.5–3 m tall.

Light

Best in full sun; where summers are hot and humid it appreciates some afternoon shade.

Soil

Neutral to slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil; it tolerates clay, dry or wet and rocky ground, but may turn chlorotic on shallow chalk.

Care

Water a newly planted shrub thoroughly about once a week in dry weather until the ground freezes; once established it tolerates drought. Prune straight after flowering and no later than mid-August. An old shrub can be cut back close to the ground in early spring to renew it.
