Growing notes
Light
Prefers full sun for best fruiting, but tolerates light shade; fruit yield decreases in shade.
Soil
Moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter; avoid waterlogged or very sandy soils.
Care
Plant in autumn or early spring. Prune in winter to maintain an open structure and encourage new growth. Water during dry spells, especially in the first year and during fruit development. Protect ripening fruit from birds with netting.
How to tell it is ripe
- Berry has reached full size.
- Colour deepens as it ripens, and red varieties turn pink or red.
- A ripe berry feels soft when squeezed gently.
- Taste one: ripe gooseberries are noticeably sweeter than hard green ones.
- Pick ripe berries with their stalk attached and handle them gently, since they burst easily, watching for the thorns.
Pests and diseases of Gooseberry
